A Tribute to Bobby Robson
For those football fans reading this you will be aware of the sad passing away of Bobby Robson. His memorial ceremony was not just about football it was about a person that did the right thing in his life by the way he conducted himself and treated others.
One of his final public comments was profound, "I was born into a black and white world, but as my last great challenge draws to a close, I am more than ever convinced that we are surrounded by light, and not darkness."

Hampshire Cup Semi-Final, Cove won 5-4 on penalties
After a hectic week, football gives me some great perspective by being the proud manager of Cove Youth, below is report from our website
http://www.coveyouthfc.co.uk/
Salisbury City v Cove Youth U16
Hants Cup Semi Final 15 February 2009
Salisbury City 1 - Cove Youth 1
Cove won 5-4 on penalties
Cove battled hard to match a well organised and talented Salisbury team.
Both sides produced some good football before an electric burst and quality finish from Kristof Gyuge broke the deadlock to put Cove 1-0 up after 20 mins. Salisbury were unlucky not to equalise on the stroke of half time when the post saved Cove before Louis Martin gratefully grabbed. Salisbury worked hard in the second half but resolute defending kept them to very limited opportunities before they managed to draw level with a header after 65 mins. The game remained hard fought but ended at 1-1. Extra time saw chances at both ends but no further score to force penalties. The drama, intense already, become even greater with Cove going up 3-1 in penalties but then missed two to take it to sudden death. Both sides scored their first but the Cove keeper saved for the third time before Cove skipper, Josh Kipping, showed no nerves to smash the winner.

A Weekend of Football
As a nice distraction from the challenges of business I had a full weekend of football which was great. On Saturday my Cove Youth U16 side trained with Cove
FC reserves, as they had no game and were brought in for extra training. The Cove
FC reserve manager is a guy called Eric Howard who at 65 years old has spent all his life in semi professional club management and great for our U16 side to work with him. Respect for the energy he shows at 65. On Sunday we played VT Youth from Southampton in the quarter final of the Hampshire County Cup and in a hard fought game we managed to secure a semi final place with a 2-1 victory. I must thank my wife for organising the after dinner buffet, making over 60 rolls on Sunday plus not moaning too much about cleaning the kit or me doing nothing else but talk about football all night on Sunday.

Cove U16
I had a great end to 2008 with Cove U16 as we won 4-1 in the Hampshire County Cup to reach the quarter finals, plus we are still top of the SYL Premier South.
In contrast I hope our club secretary, Susie Harris, recovers quickly. She does an amazing amount for the 22 youth teams at Cove with her only reward seeing the kids playing football every week.
In challenging economic times it is good to remind ourselves there are some special people about that make a real difference.

Cove FC
As a distraction from the logistics business, running Cove U16 and getting more involved in Cove Youth is a great way to balance and to de-stress.
Our U16 have signed some really exciting talent this season and they have all contributed well so far.
I have also been lucky enough to have some involvement with Cove Youth playing the likes of Woking Town U18.
Managing a side who are now moving into adulthood does have new challenges but also great rewards. We are lucky to have boys who are talented enough to progress into at least a high standard of semi professional football which is great.
Cove Youth is part of Cove FC and has a significant set up from all ages. For more information please go to

Family Time
I am looking forward to a family holiday in Alcudia, Spain that starts on 26th for 2 weeks. It has a special meaning as our first holiday abroad was to the same location. My 2 boys were 3 and 5 and I remember the second night was hit with football fever as we were playing Argentina in the World Cup. It was the fateful night for Beckham that saw him sent off and in a bizzare way was a catalyst for an amazing career. Anyway there will be less blogs whilst I am away (if any) as I owe my wife and kids as much of my time as possible while we are away.

Naughty table
Because I enjoy living dangerously, I thought it would be amusing to share a story in regard to Cove U16 a football team that I manage. The side play in Surrey Youth Premier and during the closed season there is a series of signing on days where you have to present your squad with photographs and ID plus some other information for the following season. I had another commitment and asked my wife, Tracie, to represent me. I told her it would be 5 mins in and out.
When she arrived it was a male dominated room of about 60 people and she was asked questions about what division are your side in, how are you looking for next season, do you agree with the new rules etc. That was bad enough, but then when she presented the photographs they were not cut to the right size and she was put on a 'naughty table' with scissors, glue and a load of other men. She was there for an hour. Good that after 21 years of marriage we still have give and take and I definitely took some text and verbal abuse later that evening!
