Bringing Home Heroes

I regularly talk about that fact we do not move boxes we manage our clients livelihoods. Today I received an internal message from a client we support by managing movement of aircraft parts.

Quote from the client "See what the wonderful airplane that you support so superbly accomplishes - the RAF performs very similar missions!! THANK YOU for helping us bring home heros!!!"

If you get a chance, take a moment to view the information on the below link. You will see a great video of a C17 mission to extract wounded soldiers from Afghanistan. It made me realise that sometimes we actually really affect lives not just livelihoods.

Employee Appreciation Week

Last week was employee appreciation week at YRCL. Our locations used various methods to say thank you to our staff including breakfast and lunches, visual thank you messages and a reflection by the management in meetings 'what more can we do for our staff'.

Ensuring staff are challenged, motivated and satisfied is paramount to any business and we hope that by having open dialogue our staff can directly contribute to making their environment feel like this. The aim is that the appreciation week should be ongoing not just for last week and that I am personally accessible to all our staff.

Overseas Visit

We had hectic week with our President and CEO, Jim Ritchie in town. As well as the normal type of agenda with review and strategy meetings, we had a late night at the IFW awards where we were finalists in People Development and Business Improvement categories.

Jim always takes time to speak too as many staff as he can and uses group meetings to share general information about the company plus encourages open questions. I am sure some companies may be reluctant to do this, but I have seen these meetings many times opening important areas of debate. As leaders this may sometimes be uncomfortable but listening to our staff is always very beneficial and it personally gives me a boost of energy.

My First Post!

Hello and welcome to my first ever post on my new blog, before we created this blog we completed some market research and we could not find one blog created by our competitors, so without meaning to sound presumptuous, I might be the first MD from a freight company to have a blog! But if there are any blogs being written by our competitors, I would be very interested in learning what the links are so that I can read them.

I hope this blog will allow us to communicate effectively with our prospective and existing clients and that they will feel engaged in the conversation as well as learn more about YRC Logistics. I also think that the most valuable benefit this blog will give me is that it will allow you to provide me with feedback and ideas on how we can serve you better. So with that said, that leaves me with one last thing to ask.... What do YOU want to hear about from a managing director of a freight forwarding company and how would you like to benefit by reading the blog?I will be on a trip over the bank holiday weekend and I hope that there will be lots of feedback as I am looking forward to reading them on my return.
